DoT considering exclusive Defence Band

The Department of Telecom (DoT) is considering the Defence Ministry"s demand for an exclusive band of spectrum that will not be put to civilian use like mobile telephony and broadcasting. - 3G spectrum auction likely by end of February - "It"s for defence ministry to release more spectrum" - Defence Min will release more spectrum: DoT - BSNL expansion plan hits rough patch - BSNL"s Rs 35k cr expansion hits rough patch - DoT asks 3G auctioneer to furnish details on ties with Malaysia unit The consideration of Defence Band is being examined in WPC Wing (Wireless Planning Coordination) of DoT. The issue may further be examined by a committee consisting of members of both the DoT and the Ministry of Defence, official sources said. Sources said the quantum of spectrum and the contours of this exclusive band needs scrutiny and it has to be seen that such a band is not in conflict with other users. The Department, which is currently discussing the draft National Frequency Allocation Plan (NFAP) is also looking at another proposal from the forces on creating a Defence Interest Zone, which will be a 100-km strip along the country"s international borders. The forces have sought such a zone as they need more spectrum near international borders compared to other areas. Sources said the work of NFAP and identification of Defence Band would go simultaneously. As Defence is classified in nature, it should not be the part of the NFAP, they said.
